Bangladesh Heads to Polls in Post-Uprising Election

(MENAFN) Citizens across Bangladesh headed to polling stations on Thursday to choose a new administration, marking the first national vote since a mass uprising brought an end to the Awami League’s 15-year tenure in power.

The election represents a pivotal moment for the country’s political landscape, as voters are not only selecting a government but also delivering their judgment on proposed constitutional amendments.

Over 127.6 million registered voters are entitled to participate in the electoral process. Balloting commenced at 7:30 a.m. (0130GMT) and is scheduled to proceed uninterrupted for nine hours, concluding at 4:30 p.m. (1030GMT). Authorities anticipate that preliminary outcomes will gradually emerge by late Thursday local time.

A total of 300 parliamentary representatives are being chosen through approximately 42,000 polling stations nationwide. The race features 51 political organizations and 2,034 aspirants, among them 275 independent candidates vying for legislative positions.

Beyond the 300 general constituencies filled through direct public voting, the legislature also contains 50 seats reserved exclusively for women, expanding the full composition of parliament to 350 members.

Prominent political figures, including Tarique Rahman of the BNP and Shafiqur Rahman of Jamaat-e-Islami, cast their ballots in the capital, Dhaka. Interim head Muhammad Yunus also voted there, addressing the media afterward.

“Today is a day of joy for all of Bangladesh—a day of liberation. The end of our nightmare, the beginning of new dreams," Yunus told reporters after casting his ballot.
