Fire Breaks Out at Rohingya Camp in Bangladesh

(MENAFN) A fire tore through a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh late Sunday, destroying dozens of shelters, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Monday.

In a statement shared on a US social media platform, IOM said its teams were on site from the start of the blaze, coordinating with refugee volunteers and the Bangladesh Fire Service to bring the fire under control.

The agency commended the rapid response, stating, "Their efforts helped prevent the fire from spreading further across the densely populated camp."

Local media reported that roughly 20 to 25 homes were lost, but there were no confirmed casualties.

Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.2 million Muslim Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar, most of whom fled Myanmar during a military crackdown in August 2017 that human rights organizations have described as genocide.
