UN Mission Pulls Out from Sudan Base After Drone Attack

(MENAFN) The United Nations Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA) confirmed Thursday it has evacuated its logistics installation in Kadugli, Sudan's South Kordofan state, following a fatal assault on its personnel.

Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight wounded on Dec. 13 when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a drone strike against the UN mission headquarters in Kadugli.

In an official statement, UNISFA explained that the withdrawal decision followed "an extensive assessment of the prevailing security situation in Kadugli, which has disabled the capacity for the UN to function in the area."

The UN mission affirmed its continued dedication to fulfilling its operational responsibilities in the region, emphasizing it remains vigilant regarding ground-level developments.

"We will reconsider the resumption of our activities in Kadugli when the situation permits," the statement added.

UNISFA was established in 2011 after hostilities intensified in the petroleum-rich territory between Sudan and adjacent South Sudan.

Kadugli has endured a blockade enforced by the RSF and its partner force, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), since the war's initial months and has sustained continuous artillery bombardments and aerial drone attacks, human rights organizations report.

The armed confrontation between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which ignited in April 2023, has since claimed thousands of lives and forced millions from their homes.
