Bangladesh requests India to hand over former PM Sheikh Hasina
The request, sent on Friday, also includes former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who received the same sentence, Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told reporters in Dhaka. The International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka had tried Hasina on charges linked to crimes against humanity. She fled to India on August 5, 2024, during a mass uprising that, according to UN reports, resulted in over 1,400 deaths.
Law adviser Asif Nazrul added that the interim government is considering approaching the International Criminal Court to secure Hasina’s return. Following the verdict, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry described granting her asylum as “a grave act of unfriendly behavior and a travesty of justice for any other country.”
Bangladesh previously requested Hasina’s extradition in December, but India has yet to respond. The two nations signed a mutual extradition treaty in 2013. The country is preparing for its first elections since the protests in February 2026, while Hasina’s party, the Awami League, remains barred from political activity.
