Nepal Tops Global “Nature-Connected” Rankings

(MENAFN) Nepal has been recognized as the world's most "nature-connected" country, whereas Spain occupies the bottom spot in a global study examining emotional and psychological bonds with the natural environment, a media outlet reported on Saturday.

The United Kingdom also fared poorly, ranking 55th out of 61 countries, alongside the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Japan.

The research, published in the journal Ambio, surveyed 57,000 individuals across 61 nations. It evaluated how social, cultural, economic, and geographic influences shape people's attitudes and attachment to nature.

Spain came last in the rankings, with the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Japan also performing worse than the UK.

Nepal secured the top position, followed by Iran, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. Within Europe, only Croatia and Bulgaria reached the top 10, while France was the next-highest ranked European nation, coming in at 19th place.

The study, led by a team of British and Austrian researchers including Miles Richardson, a professor of nature connectedness at the University of Derby, concluded that spirituality and religious belief were the most significant indicators of a strong connection to nature.

Conversely, the research revealed that “ease of doing business”—a World Bank metric assessing how business-friendly a country is—was linked to weaker nature connection.

Nations with higher rankings in "ease of doing business" tend to exhibit lower levels of engagement with the natural world.
