Nepal Emerges as World’s Most “Nature-Connected” Country

(MENAFN) Nepal has emerged as the world’s most “nature-connected” country, while Spain trails at the bottom, according to a study highlighted by The Guardian on Saturday.

Britain ranked near the bottom as well, placing 55th out of 61 countries alongside the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Japan.

The research, published in the journal Ambio, surveyed 57,000 individuals across 61 nations, examining how social, cultural, economic, and geographic factors influence people’s emotional and psychological ties to the natural world.

Spain was last among the surveyed nations, while the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Japan all scored lower than Britain. At the other end of the spectrum, Nepal claimed the top spot, followed by Iran, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. Within Europe, only Croatia and Bulgaria reached the top 10, with France ranking as the next-highest European country at 19th place.

The team behind the study, led by British and Austrian academics including Miles Richardson, professor of nature connectedness at the University of Derby, found that spirituality and religious faith were the strongest predictors of a close relationship with nature.

In contrast, the research revealed that “ease of doing business” -- a World Bank measurement of the business-friendly character of a country -- was correlated with less nature connection. The study noted that countries ranking high in "ease of doing business," a World Bank metric that indicates a market-friendly economy, tend to have lower nature connection.
